After the Passover
the words that Christ spoke
stopping in the garden
their eyes heavy with sleep
Three chosen, going farther with Christ
but all of them wondering
what the words he had spoken
what the new words meant
The loaf and the cup
his body and his blood
watching him from a distance
praying in obvious pain
Trying as best they could
the disciples, less the one,
to stay awake in the garden
while Christ went off to pray
Wondering what the master said
to Peter, to John, to James
so sternly, in rebuke
the words before he went to pray,
again and again
Suddenly, all awake
the betrayer in our midst
Jesus taken by the mob
we all ran away
