What they must have seemed
the disciples in the garden
unable to stay awake
asleep while the master prayed
With wine in their bellies
the Passover lamb, the bread
all of the feast heavy
the words he spoke
swimming in their heads
Christ praying in the garden
while they lay sleeping
unaware of his grief, his pain
the betrayer close at hand
