Layers of memory
a row of cups before him
like Christ in the garden
submitting to God
in turn taking each
raising the cups to his lips
drinking the bitterness
that we may live
Sharing his story
the pain inflicted
God beside
all of his days
the memories painful
far more than uncomfortable
the bitterness of history
dredged to the fore
offered to us
as pain, as sacrifice
as a means of sharing
the depths of God’s love
here with us
through all our struggles
lifting us up
when life knocks us to the floor
