Cut with safety scissors by Raymond A. Foss

The shape of the ferns
rounded, lobed edges
paper-bag-brown
damp in their drying
frost turning to vapor
rising in the sunlight
translucent, aglow

The rows of their planting
as if by some young hand
cut with safety scissors
placed just so
illumined for all to see
if we would slow down
or even get out and walk

Grace in the offering
to see our master’s hand
the field alive in autumn
a symphony of colors
revealing his artistry
the colors alive
before their dying
