The would-be disciples
putting us in their story
wanting to follow
but things in the way
It is as if they were saying
tomorrow I will follow
just let me finish
that which I have started
Hard knowing millennia later
the inflection in Christ’s voice
when he heard their statements
when he answered, “follow me”.
The bar higher than they wanted
the work needing to be done
his call, in the moment
turning around, going a new way
We too, in our journey
needing to take stock
to look for all the things
that are holding us back
Leaving them,
like the boats on the seashore
or maybe the boats on the waters
following Christ on the waves
