On the Night of His Betrayal - edited - Poem by Raymond A. Foss

The meal, the Seder
his blessing of the bread
the breaking, the sharing
the cup of his sacrifice

In words they had never heard
a new covenant spoken
the meal that we now share
remembering what he did

That night of his betrayal
offering to all of them, all of them welcome
though they would deny him, betray him,
though they would desert him

Like us, still today, living disciples
needing his gift, his grace, his love,
forgiveness and his mercy
when we too betray, deny him
when we too run away
