Not at the beginning
not with Adam in Eden
with Jesus in his anguish
in the night of Gethsemane
Our heads spinning
the words he had spoke
seeing Judas race
furtively, quickly
from our midst
Christ, our master washing
the dust, as a servant
taking the bread, breaking it
calling it his body, given for us
The wine, the chalice,
part of the ritual,
changing the wine
to be the blood of Christ
Now in the dark, in the garden
just outside the city
on the Mount of Olives
wondering what will come next
Left at a distance, Christ going farther
kneeling, praying
crying out in his anguish
to our father in heaven
We who had followed
shaken by his statements
what did he mean
in speaking those words
Too soon we became aware
the coming commotion
Judas and the mob
coming to take Christ away
