Listening only to my breathing
my throbbing heartbeat
my headache growing, pounding
as I ate of the bread he broke
and tried to drink of the cup
of my master’s blood
The words cascading
sending my mind reeling
not knowing where to turn
wanting to run and hide
The ancient words
once thick with meaning
now replaced with pain
my savior, my shepherd
about to be a sacrifice
Not wanting to look at my brothers
those others he called disciples
as we sat as his friends
after he had washed our feet
Sitting in the borrowed room
suddenly silent
the rush of preparation
forgotten with his solemn speech
never to be forgotten
Within our own selves
each of us turning
finishing the meal together
suddenly alone
each within his thoughts
