Calling Us Friends - Poem by Raymond A. Foss

Like those around that table
each time we approach
the rail for the holy communion
no longer servants,
calling us friends

Christ offering each of us
his body and his blood
going before us to heaven
his work here was done

Our brother, our shepherd
Christ, our savior, our king
the one whose sacrifice
gave us a way to God

We are the ones
to toil on the earth
following our father’s call
doing our master’s work

Spreading the message of God’s love
his grace, his unmerited gift
the son, God come to earth
that we may truly live
