In a time of vipers
reading the words
John’s words, preaching
claiming the prophecy
the words of Isaiah
his father’s words too
when he began to speak
his role laid out

The path before him
speaking truth to the leaders
to the peoples of his age

So much like then
this modern age
all of us, Christians,
in the wilderness
standing in our rivers
in the desert places
voices crying out
in a time of vipers
