Under the flat board
The second rail
Of the fence
By the walk,
Above the drop
To the brook -
One by six -
Weathered, peeling
and cracked

A tan
walking stick
(Diapheromera femorata)
Perched
Hanging on with
three legs
clutched the soft wood
from the summer rain

he swung as the cars blew by
forelegs and one more,
casting the spell

Me on my walk
Disconcerted
What was that?
Seemingly hovering
At first
Four inches or more
Motionless
By not
